Data Collection for a Household Survey in the Ninewa Plains

The Statistical Office for Social Sciences (SOSS Company) contracted with Malteser International (MI Organization) to conduct a data collection in Ninewa Plains, using feedback surveys designed by MI. The survey instrument was a questionnaire designed by MI in order to collect data through Computer Assisted Personal Interviewing (CAPI) and Computer Assisted Telephone Interview with affected populations in Ninewa Plains that had got support from MI to rehabilitate their damaged houses. The surveyed places were divided into three geographical places: Baghdida (Qaraqosh) sub-district (SD) in Al-hamdaniyah district, Bartella SD in Al-hamdaniyah district, and Baashiqa SD in Mosul district.

The main purpose of the data collection was providing MI with 673 interviews in Ninewa Plains which is located in Ninewa governorate of Iraq in order to motivate people in this area to return back to their repaired houses. There were other purposes, such as:

  1. Programming survey tool using Kobotoolbox
  2. Testing of the survey questionnaire using a mobile device (Tablets)
  3. Training of Enumerators and Supervisors
  4. Pilot testing of the survey
  5. Translate of open-ended questions of the survey questionnaire
  6. Data cleaning of the analyzing of the survey through SPSS and MS Excel software.

In February 2020, a two-day training course was conducted under the supervision of MI and SOSS to ensure standardization, understanding, and logistical feasibility and contingencies. Then, on the third day, SOSS teams conducted a pilot test in order to confirm the success of the whole project. After one week, the team started its first day of the field survey in all three SDs. The team was consisted of 4 supervisors, 18 enumerators, 4 standby enumerators, with 4 persons for data cleaning, analyzing, translating, and coordination. The team was composed of SOSS researchers and the Statistical Consulting Bureau researchers of Mosul University (SCB), Without them, the team would not be able to succeed in this project. The duration of the field survey was approximately 14 days. SOSS used Mobile Data Collection (MDC) through tablets or mobile devices to collect data depending on GPSs provided by MI for each visited household. But due to COVID-19 curfew, SOSS used CATI to finish 20 remaining interviews. The total number of cleaned interviews conducted by the team was 475 interviews. In another hand, the team failed to conduct interviews with more than 200 HHs due to insufficient criteria. Meaning that the survey database consisted of 691 cases.
